System hangs at reboot [SOLVED]

Postby ThomasR. » Thu Aug 25, 2016 12:11 pm

Hi,

sometimes the System does not reboot if I enter the 'reboot' command at the serial console.
The system begins to shutdown but blocks at this Line:
"sending all processes the TERM signal ..." and nothing happens. Only a power-cycle helps.

I'm using Yocto-jethro (4.1.15-6UL)

Any suggestions?

Hi Thomas.
I can't reproduce your issue - it works fine for me.
You wrote "sometimes" - do you have a scenario I can follow to reproduce the issue?

Please make sure you are using the latest kernel commit (it would be best to follow http://variwiki.com/index.php?title=DAR ... o_R1_build) - this will probably solve your problem, as I don't see any problem with the current release.

Regards,
Eran

Hi Eran,

I've build these Yocto image according the instruction in the wiki, and if I see it right there is no newer version as I have used.

This error is really sporadic, maybe it comes every 20 "reboot" calls and unfortunately I can't see any pattern.
The system then even hangs if nobody is logged in so I guess that everytime the same processes are running.

We do a reboot whenever a user has changed settings in our webfrontend so this is really a disadvantage for us.

Any other suggestions?
Regards,
Thomas

Please run "cat /proc/version" and paste the output here.

Hi,

I've done a complete new Yocto-setup on last friday, according to the instructions at the wiki-page.
http://variwiki.com/index.php?title=DAR ... o_R1_build

The problem stays the same. This is the error log.

Code: Select all

INIT: Switching to runlevel: 6
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
Stopping Dropbear SSH server: stopped /usr/sbin/dropbear (pid 333)
dropbear.
Stopping system message bus: dbus.
Stopping ntpd: done
Stopping syslogd/klogd: stopped syslogd (pid 346)
stopped klogd (pid 349)
done
Stopping tcf-agent: OK
Stopping Lighttpd Web Server: stopped /usr/sbin/lighttpd (pid 363)
lighttpd.
Deconfiguring network interfaces... done.
Sending all processes the TERM signal...

And at this point nothing happens.

This is the version information:

Code: Select all

cat /proc/version
Linux version 4.1.15-6UL+gf5166d6 (tr@swn-dev) (gcc version 5.2.0 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Sep 9 11:22:25 CEST 2016

Additional info:
I've created a new start-up script that waits 10 sec. and does a reboot then automaticly. This has worked over night without problems.
So it seems this problem does only appear if I reboot the system after it runs for a while ...

Regards,
Thomas

- Do you use a SOM with NAND or eMMC?
- What SOM rev. and carrier rev. are you using?
- Can you please post a picture of your setup, with the SOM visable?
- Where do you boot from and what device tree (dtb) are you using?
- Does it happen only when you run your webfrontend/other SW or also when the system is idle?
We've released a new recovery SD card today (v11).
Can you reproduce the problem with it, or just with your SW?

Another question:
When the issue happens, does the system completely hang, or can you still get a response via the UART debug?

Hi,

>> Do you use a SOM with NAND or eMMC?
NAND

>> What SOM rev. and carrier rev. are you using?
SOM: Rev1.2, Carrier: Own

>>Where do you boot from and what device tree (dtb) are you using?
NAND WIFI

>>Does it happen only when you run your webfrontend/other SW or also when the system is idle?
Does also happen if the system is idle and I print "reboot" via the serial console.

>>Can you reproduce the problem with the new recovery SD card, or just with your SW?
Both, recovery + own image

>>does the system completely hang, or can you still get a response via the UART debug?
No response at all.

Today I've realized that this problem does not occour with the Variscite carrier-board, only with our own.

Any suggestion?

Thomas

Hi
in this case,
the difference is probably the power supplies.
put a scope on teh main VBAT supply, to see if there are major spikes or power drops.
you might want to try and add bulk capacitors
